"The Helm is Manned" (2026)

Can't click to move? Ship sailing on its own? Here is why your crew has mutinied (not really).

The Cause

You have assigned a Crewmate to the Captain role.

Why is this happening?

In the OSRS Sailing skill, you can hire crewmates. If you assign a crewmate to the "Helm" or "Captain" slot in the Crew Management interface, they take control of the ship's movement.

This means your click-to-move inputs are ignored because the AI is steering.

How to Fix It

Open the Sailing Tab (Anchor icon).
Click on Crew Management.
Find the crewmate assigned to the Helm icon.
Right-click them and select "Unassign" or drag them to "Idle".
You should now be able to click the Helm and steer manually.

FAQ

Is there any benefit to manning the helm?

Yes! If you set a destination on the World Map, an assigned Captain will auto-pilot the ship there, allowing you to AFK or do other activities on deck (like Fletching).
